Booking your railway tickets offline can waste your time and money. So to ease the process of train ticket bookings you might want to prefer IRCTC online booking.
The IRCTC official website can help you with booking your train tickets, train enquiry, seat availability, train running status, PNR status check, tatkal timings, and tatkal booking time.
It’s the story of the past when we had to stand in queue for booking our train tickets.
The IRCTC website has booking rate of more than 3 lakh tickets per second during peak hours during the holiday season (summers mostly).
However, the process of IRCTC online booking is not easy, especially if you are not a regular internet user.
This step-by-step guide will help you to book tickets easily without getting stuck somewhere.
To book a train ticket online, you will need an account. You must sign up and create an account. It’s super easy and simple!
During signing up, you will be asked to fill simple form fields like your preferred username, password, name, address, phone number, and other personal details.
Once you have an account, Login to using your username and password.

Once you are successfully logged in, “Plan my travel” page is loaded.
Here you can check for IRCTC seat availability, train enquiry, PNR status, train running status, tatkal seat availability, etc.
Under “Plan my travel” box, fill details such as from, to, date, ticket type, quota and then click “Find trains” button.
IRCTC train availability
The “List of Trains” shows the number of trains available for that route.
If you want to check the live train running status, train running information, and IRCTC train availability, Click on any name of the train under the list of trains column name.
In order to find the fare of a ticket, click on the available class in the selected train under “List of trains”.
The fare will be shown to you depending on the type of class you selected. The fare that would be displayed will be for a single adult Passenger including the service charges imposed by the IRCTC.
It also shows the IRCTC train availability and seat availability.
IRCTC online booking
To book your tickets, click on “Book Now” link.
If you want to select other train then click on “RESET” button and choose another train.
Check and fill details such as train name, destination, station names, and passenger details like name, sex, berth preference for all the passengers willing to share the ticket.
Under “Payment Option” select the payment mode and your desired bank from the drop down list.
When you will click on the “Make Payment” button, it will redirect you to the website of the bank you selected to make the payment.
You can choose to pay using your credit card, debit card, Net/Mobile banking, cash card & credit card EMI options.
After the payment is made, the screen would display the details.
You can also book your return tickets by clicking “Book Return Ticket”.
It will redirect you to the “Plan my travel” web page with the only difference that the “From” and “to” station would have been swapped.
IRCTC cancellation charges
If you wish to cancel your ticket — go to “My transactions” tab and click “Booked ticket history”, in the top navigation menu bar.
Select the ticket which you wish to cancel and click on “Go for cancellation”.
You may select the passengers whose reservation you want to cancel.
If a few passengers have cancelled their tickets then a new reservation slip would be generated and that must be carried during the journey.
